Hymenoplasty: Patient Information & Frequently Asked Questions
What is hymenoplasty?
Hymenoplasty, or hymenal repair surgery, is a minor surgical procedure that reapproximates existing hymenal tissue at the vaginal opening. The procedure alters only the hymenal tissue and does not change vaginal anatomy, reproductive organs, or sexual function.
From a medical standpoint, the hymen is a normal anatomic variant with significant individual variation. Its appearance does not reliably indicate sexual activity.
Why do patients request hymenoplasty?
Patients may seek hymenoplasty for personal reasons that can include—but are not limited to—cultural, religious, emotional, or psychosocial considerations. Some patients describe a desire for physical restoration or symbolic closure following life events.
Consistent with professional medical guidance, we recognize that:
- There is no medical definition of virginity
- Hymenal anatomy does not determine sexual history
- Choosing surgery is a personal decision made by the patient
We do not assume or require any particular motivation for pursuing this procedure.
Who may be a candidate?
Candidates for hymenoplasty typically include adults who:
- Are in good overall health
- Are requesting the procedure voluntarily
- Have realistic expectations
- Demonstrate understanding of risks, benefits, and alternatives
In alignment with ethical guidance, hymenoplasty is not performed on minors and is not appropriate in situations involving coercion or external pressure.
How is the procedure performed?
Hymenoplasty is typically performed in our office with local anesthesia but can also be done in a surgery center with or without sedation. In either case, the procedure is outpatient. Dr. Nosti uses the Pillar Technique developed by Dr. Red Alinsod, which uses an ultrafine radiofrequency device to create consistent and virtually undetectable results. The ultimate goal of the surgery is to bleed during first intercourse. It takes approximately one hour to complete the surgery.
What is recovery like?
Most patients experience mild postoperative symptoms, including:
- Light spotting
- Mild swelling or tenderness
- Temporary discomfort
Typical recovery guidance includes:
- Return to normal daily activity within 1–3 days
- Avoid vaginal insertion (tampons, intercourse, exams) for 4–6 weeks
- Follow individualized postoperative instructions
Will the procedure cause bleeding with future intercourse?
Hymenoplasty cannot guarantee bleeding with future vaginal penetration but the pillar technique creates multiple bands of tissue at the introitus dramatically increasing the probably that this will occur. However, bleeding depends on multiple factors including tissue elasticity, surgical healing, and individual anatomy.
Importantly, medical consensus recognizes that bleeding is not a reliable or medically valid indicator of virginity.
Are there risks?
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Scarring
- Discomfort with penetration
- Need for revision
Complications are uncommon when postoperative care instructions are followed.
Does hymenoplasty affect fertility or sexual function?
- Does not affect fertility
- Does not alter reproductive organs
- Does not impact long-term sexual function or sensation
Is the procedure confidential?
